Spain has a host of wonderful villages. And it’s not just us who say so, the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) itself has published a list of the best rural areas around the world. Each country could present three proposals for recognition. In Spain’s case, all of the candidates were awarded. Guadelupe, Rupit y Pruït and Alquézar are now among the world’s best villages for tourism. Would you like to know what makes them so special? Keep reading.

THE SPANISH TOWN FAMOUS FOR ITS CULTURAL AND ARCHITECTURAL BEAUTY: GUADALUPE

One of the towns best known for its attractiveness is Guadalupe. The Cáceres town is on the list published by the UNWTO. One of the most important stops is the Royal Monastery of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. It’s an architectural work that brings together neoclassical, Gothic, Mudejar, Renaissance and Baroque art. It’s also an excellent place to stroll around and discover the arcaded houses and the central square that’s so full of history.

The Parador de Guadalupe is located in the same town. Here you can enjoy a refreshing swim in our incredible swimming pool with views of the monastery. In addition to the cultural visits mentioned above, from our establishment, you can explore the natural environment. For example, you can visit the Villuercas - Íbores - Jara Geopark or Cañamero beach, the first blue flag beach in Cáceres.

Extremadura has some of the greatest natural and gastronomic wealth on the peninsula. That’s why we suggest further options like the Parador de Trujillo. It’s located in the historic centre and close to the Monfragüe National Park, the most important natural heritage site in the region. In addition, the Parador de Mérida, a city that’s been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, is another of our top choices. Finally, you can visit one of the great cities of Extremadura, Cáceres, to enjoy the best local cuisine at the province's Parador.

RUPIT Y PRUÏT DECLARED BEST VILLAGE IN THE WORLD BY THE WORLD TOURISM ORGANISATION

The excellent symbiosis of nature and artistic culture in the Catalan town probably did not go unnoticed by the UNWTO. The bridges in the region are not to be missed, these include the Can Badaire bridge and the suspension bridge, rebuilt in 1994. Other obligatory stops are the route of the waterfall of Sallent and the church of Sant Miquel Arcàngel with neoclassical and baroque touches. Just 50 minutes away, we’ll be delighted to welcome you at the Parador de Vic Sau with its own tourist recommendations: the Natural Area of Les Guilleries - Savassona and the 2nd-century Roman temple. Come and relax in this peaceful little oasis.

Halfway from our main destination, we find the Parador de Cardona, located in the middle of a medieval complex dating from the 9th century. If you want to maintain a balance between visits to nature and the metropolis, Cardona is your best choice. Its historic centre has been declared an Asset of National Tourist Interest and is close to Barcelona. And if you want to take the opportunity to go to the beach, the Parador de Aiguablava is perfect. Walk along the coves of Begur and discover the best views of the bay while you enjoy a well-deserved summer break.

ALQUÉZAR: A HISTORIC TOWN WITH MANY LEISURE OPTIONS

The town of Alquézar has been declared a Historic-Artistic Site. Its atmosphere is steeped in history, especially the Islamic influence. Its narrow-cobbled streets will immerse you in your own medieval novel. Some of the sites not to be missed are the old Muslim fortress, the Collegiate Church of Santa María; the Río Vero Cultural Park, where there are many remains of cave art, and the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Nature Reserve.

As it’s located in border territory, we suggest you stay at the Parador de Lleida. The area is home to the Seu Vella complex and the group of Romanesque churches in the Boí Valley, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The town is also famous for its food and wines, which have been awarded the Costers del Segre Designation of Origin.

Alternatively, you can stay at the Parador de Bielsa. You'll love it if you're in the mood for dynamic tourism. Located in the middle of the Pineta Valley and Monte Perdido, among other activities that can be enjoyed here include: hiking, mountain biking and canyoning in its countless gorges. For its part, the Parador de Alcañiz will suit you if you don't want to worry about taking the car. Strolling through the beautiful streets of its historic quarter, you'll come across places of interest like the Gothic Market and the Fuente de los 72 Caños fountain.
