The perfect photo: five sunsets worth travelling for
18 de August 2026

The finest show of the day requires neither a stage nor a ticket. It takes place every evening, lasts just a few minutes, and is never exactly the same twice. All you need to do is find the perfect vantage point to watch how the fading light completely transforms a landscape. Medieval castles, historic towns, beaches stretching out to the Atlantic, or mountains that seem to touch the sky then reveal a different kind of beauty—more serene and altogether fleeting.

Photographers know this moment well. They call it the golden hour: that brief window before nightfall when the light grows warmer and any landscape is shown at its absolute best. It is also, needless to say, a favourite moment for many travellers.

Spain boasts countless settings where the sunset becomes an integral part of the journey itself. Some of the finest spots from which to admire it are found precisely where heritage and landscape meet, such as at the Paradores. We suggest five destinations where the last light of day turns any photograph into an unforgettable memory.

When the Maestrazgo is bathed in gold

As the sun begins to set over Lower Aragon, the medieval skyline of Alcañiz takes on a golden hue that completely transforms the town. For a few fleeting minutes, the towers, rooftops, and historic façades seem to glow before night falls.

One of the best places to take in this spectacle is around the La Estanca wetland, which offers a magnificent panoramic view of the town centre. From various high vantage points around the town, you can also see how the light accentuates the silhouettes of churches, palaces, and city walls.

Perched high above the town stands the Parador de Alcañiz, set within an impressive heritage complex comprising a former 12th- and 13th-century castle-convent and the later Palacio de los Comendadores. Its privileged location offers sweeping views over the Maestrazgo landscape as the day slowly draws to a close.

When the light catches the stone of the ancient castle and the outline of Alcañiz stands silhouetted against the horizon, a single frame is enough to understand why this is one of those places that lingers in the camera’s memory almost as vividly as in one’s own.

A sunset above the clouds

There are few places in Spain where the sunset can be experienced from an altitude of over 1,500 metres. In the heart of Gran Canaria, Cruz de Tejeda offers a unique perspective over the island’s volcanic landscape and, on certain days, even over a sea of clouds that seems to stretch to infinity.

As the afternoon wears on, the mountains shift in colour and shifting shadows cast new shapes across ravines and hillsides. It is one of those scenes from which it is difficult to look away.

The Parador de Cruz de Tejeda makes the most of this exceptional setting. From its rooms, terraces, and communal areas, your gaze wanders among peaks and deep valleys. But there is one particularly privileged spot: the spa pool, suspended against the backdrop of the landscape, where the sunset takes on an almost cinematic quality.

On the clearest days, the sea of clouds and the volcanic peaks create a scene that seems almost surreal. It is one of those photographs that needs no filters, because the light does all the work.

The city that lights up by the sea

Some sunsets do not end when the sun sinks below the horizon. In Málaga, the spectacle continues as the city gradually lights up. From the heights of Gibralfaro, the bay, the harbour, and the historic centre are slowly transformed into a mosaic of lights stretching along the Mediterranean.

The privileged location of this hill has been of strategic importance since Phoenician times. Later came the Romans, the Moors, and the Catholic Monarchs. Today, it remains one of the finest vantage points over the city.

The Parador de Málaga Gibralfaro occupies precisely this exceptional spot. From its terraces, swimming pool, and guest rooms, you can enjoy one of the most comprehensive panoramic views of Málaga, where the castle, the Alcazaba, the cathedral, and the sea come together to create an unforgettable scene.

The moment arrives when the sky still retains its last warm hues and the first lights begin to outline the city. This contrast makes the panorama one of Málaga’s most iconic sights.

The light that inspired poets

Few cities share such an intimate relationship with their landscape as Soria. The River Duero, the poplars, the paths once trodden by writers like Antonio Machado and Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, and the serenity of its surroundings have inspired poets and travellers for generations.

As the day draws to a close, the city takes on a particularly evocative atmosphere. From the surrounding viewpoints, you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the old town, the river, and the gentle hills encircling the Soria capital.

In a privileged position, surrounded by the woodland of the Parque del Castillo, the Parador de Soria looks down upon the city and the sweep of the Duero. It is the perfect spot to watch the light slowly fade over the so-called ‘city of poets’.

Perhaps that is why the best memory is not a perfect photograph, but rather that soft light over the Duero that so many writers encountered before us. Even so, it remains hard to resist reaching for your camera.

Spain’s most famous historic skyline

There are panoramic views that belong to the collective imagination, and Toledo’s is undoubtedly one of them. Perched high above a bend in the River Tagus, at sunset the city reveals one of Spain’s most recognisable urban silhouettes.

The Alcázar, the Cathedral, the bell towers, and the ancient walls paint a scene that shifts constantly as the light fades. For a few minutes, the stone glows with golden hues and the city seems suspended between history and legend.

One of the best places to take in this view is the Parador de Toledo, situated directly opposite the historic centre. From its terrace, you can enjoy an exceptional panoramic view that allows you to take in some of the most important monuments of the former imperial capital at a single glance.

There are few places where the sunset offers such a complete panorama. Waiting for the sun to set over the Tagus is almost a ritual… and the reward is usually one of those photographs destined for pride of place in your travel album.
