Parador de Alcañiz

The Parador de Alcañiz in Teruel is located in one of the most complex monument sites in Aragon. This enormous enclosure, half castle and half convent, impresses the traveller with its imposing silhouette that looms over the entire area.

The building which was erected in the 12th and 13th centuries, still retains its keep, the bell tower, the sacristy and the part rebuilt as an Aragonese palace. The Plateresque tomb, the Baroque façade and its peaceful garden have also been preserved. Special mention must be made of its 14th-century Gothic frescoes, undoubtedly one of the castle's gems.

Guests can have breakfast in the cloister, enjoy a glass of wine in the gallery, or read on the sofa while they wait for dusk to fall behind the walls. The Parador de Alcañiz has everything you need to forget your daily routine and to relax. The ample spaces and the carefully decorated interiors enhance the outside light, making the rooms warm and welcoming places that are hard to leave.

All the Parador’s windows look out onto the town of Alcañiz, which has a rich history. Stare wide-eyed at its medieval underground sections, the Fountain with 72 Spouts, or the Gothic Lonja. And have fun at the MotorLand Aragón circuit which offers a sports area in which to practice autocross, karting or motocross, and enjoy competitions such as the MotoGP Grand Prix of Aragon.

What to do in Parador de Alcañiz

Alcañiz is the most Mediterranean city in Aragon, and it is located in the centre of Lower Aragon. You can start your visit by exploring the castle keep and its paintings at the Parador, which are not to be missed. We recommend you continue your exploration with one of the guided tours of Alcañiz, which take you through the passages, galleries and the medieval icebox; and to the Plaza de España with its Town Hall and the 16th century Lonja, the Sanctuary of the Virgen de Pueyos, the Fountain with 72 Spouts, the natural landscapes of La Estanca and Las Saladas, and the Motorland Aragón speed circuit.

Another attractive plan? Take your bike and cycle for less than an hour to reach the Val de Zafán Greenway. There, lose yourself along the old railway tracks, now adapted for biking or horse riding. And if you’re interested in history, the province of Teruel has more than 70 sites of Levantine Rock Art.

Alcañiz is also one of the nine villages on the Ruta del Tambor y del Bombo trail, a major cultural and tourist route of several that are available in the area. You can also take the Maestrazgo Route, the Guadalope Route, or the Matarraña Route.
