[email protected]The Parador de Mérida, one of the first in the network of Paradores, stands on the site of the Roman praetorium, on top of the ruins of the temple dedicated to the Concord of Augustus, inside a 17th c. Baroque monastery founded by the hospitaller order of the Franciscan monks.
Located in the heart of the city, the Parador breathes heritage and history. The facilities, which include an outdoor swimming pool, gym, sauna and solarium, merges with historical spaces such as the cloister with Romanesque columns and the main salon, which was the previously chapel and is now an ideal place for any kind of celebration and event.
The Parador de Mérida stands within the Convento de Jesús, built in 1725 to meet the growing need for monasteries and hospitals in a period of epidemics and wars with Portugal. It was built in the Baroque style and is topped with two beautiful belfries.
Located in what was the monastery’s market garden, the Parador is home to the Garden of Antiquities, a unique space where visitors can see Roman, Visigothic and Mudejar archaeological exhibits, and where the water of the fountains and pools makes a harmonious whole with the beauty and variety of its exuberant vegetation.

Founded in 25 BCE by the emperor Augustus, Mérida is home to the most important Roman settlement on the peninsula. The best way to discover the city is to wander through its olds streets and see spectacular monuments such as the Roman Amphitheatre, Circus and Theatre, which has been the backdrop for the International Festival of Classical Theatre since 1933. Other sights not to be missed include the National Museum of Roman Art and the city’s magnificent Arab heritage, such as the Alcazaba and the Archaeological Complex of the Morería.
Mérida is much more than the city, Nearby you can see prehistoric structures such as the Dolmen of Lácara and the burial sites of Huerta Montero, and visit the Roman reservoirs of Proserpina and Cornalvo, where you can relax in the bathing areas and bars. If you like nature, you’ll be amazed by the Natural Park of Cornalvo, while the tremendous biological wealth of the National Park of Monfragüe is just a little further away. And if golf is your game, you’ll find an excellent course just 8 kilometres away from the city.
Beyond the historical-artistic heritage, the region of Mérida has natural sites such as the Monfragüe National Park and the Proserpina reservoir, one of the great recreational areas of the city, whiths bathing areas and beach bars. Also of great interest are the Lácara Dolmen and the Roman spa of Alange. And if you are a golf lover, just eight kilometres away there is an excellent golf course where you can practice this sport.
