Sierra de Gredos’s Regional Park holds one of the most impressive natural treasures of Avila, an ideal destination for nature lovers. Of glacial origin and at an altitude of 2000 meters, it offers a mountain orchard that combines the beauty of crystalline waters with the majesty of the Almanzor Peak, the highest in the Central System.

Gredos’s five lagoons are distributed along the valley and each one hides a special uniqueness: Laguna Cimera, the highest (2103 m) and often surrounded by snowfields even in summer; Laguna Galana (2101 m), irregularly shaped and close to the Risco Galana; the Mediana (2097 m), which simulates a mirror where the majesty of a clean and clear sky is reflected; Laguna Brincalobitos (2074 m), smaller and more apart and Laguna Bajera (2093 m), which collects the waters of all the previous ones. Together, they form a circular circuit that delights hikers and lovers of alpine landscapes, with ample opportunities for rest and contemplation.

In winter, snow covers the trails and mountains, creating an idyllic environment to enjoy the tranquility and fresh air. A sustainable tourism option that also offers a unique stargazing experience, since the absence of light pollution and the clarity of the skies of Gredos’ make this destination an exceptional place for astro-tourism.

The hike is challenging, ideal for hikers and adventurers interested in long routes. The most famous trail starts at the Gredos Platform and is 22.5 km long and takes between 10 and 12 hours to complete. The biodiversity around the lagoons is fascinating. Mountain goats, the emblem of Sierra de Gredos, can be seen in the snow, while birds such as the alpine accentor fly over the area even in winter.

A Legendary Environment

This mountain wonderland has been the scene of legends since ancient times. One of the best known recreates the story of “La Dama del Almanzor”, a protective spirit who, according to local shepherds, appears on full moon nights to guide lost travelers and protect them from the dangers of the mountain.

According to popular belief, each lagoon is guarded by a mythical being: water nymphs who bless those who obey the laws of nature and punish those who turn their backs on them.
