Museums and more museums. The Andalusian coastal city of Malaga is more than just sun and sand; it also offers a wide range of cultural options.
Thyssen, Picasso and Pompidou: three names that are turning the city into a place for art lovers.
Picasso museum
Our first museum visit takes us to the Palacio de Buenavista in the city centre, a restored 16th century building equipped to house the work of the genius of art. Picasso permeates every room of this centre of pilgrimage for art lovers. It exhibits artworks of the universal artist, who, beyond painting, demonstrated his ability in all kinds of artistic expressions. The permanent collection is a real gem of the city.
Carmen Thyssen Museum
Calle Compañía is the site of the Thyssen Museum, a space where, along with the permanent exhibitions, the Foundation that manages the museum offers temporary exhibitions with works by the best painters in history.
Roman Theatre in Malaga
At the foot of the spectacular Alcazaba of Malaga and open to the public in one of the most visited areas of the city, you will find the theatre that Augustus Caesar had built in the first century B.C. It has an interpretation centre which provides details of the construction of this building that has remained intact over the centuries and today is one of Malaga's major tourist attractions.
While being a marvellous sight during the day, the Roman theatre becomes a real wonder when floodlit at night.
Pompidou Centre Malaga
In March 2015 a new museum was opened to further extend the artistic and cultural offer of the city with a space based on experience in the management of the arts and heritage of the original French centre. The Paris Pompidou transfers part of its art collection to the Andalusian city with samples of its art collection and temporary exhibitions. The museum has the form of a coloured cube that stands out on the promenade of Malaga.
There are many more museums in the streets of Malaga, a perfect destination for a getaway trip or a longer holiday. Whichever option you choose, there is a Parador in which to stay to make the experience complete:
The Malaga Gibralfaro Parador, next to another museum, the Gibralfaro Castle museum.
