Within the Paradores network, there are rooms that tell stories, and at the Parador de Zafra, Suite 314 is one of them. Known as the "Golden Room," opening its door means stepping into a space where the palace's memory remains alive, and every detail holds a fragment of its past.
A Palace with Centuries of History
The Parador de Zafra occupies the former palace of the Dukes of Feria, a building that embodies much of the city's history. Its origins date back to an Islamic fortress that, after various episodes of conquest and reconquest, fell into Christian hands in the 13th century. Over time, and particularly from the 15th century onwards, the Lords of Feria chose Zafra as the centre of their domain and transformed that fortress into their residence.

The building’s evolution reflects this transition from a defensive structure to a stately palace, without ever entirely losing its fortress character. Its nine crenelated towers, with the imposing keep (torre del homenaje) as the most outstanding feature, still define the exterior outline. Inside, however, refinement becomes evident in marble courtyards, galleries open to the garden, and Gothic-Mudejar coffered ceilings that attest to the family’s wealth and power.

Throughout the centuries, the building went through many stages. After it ceased to be a noble residence, it served as a hospital, a school, and even a shelter for the destitute. On15 October 1968, when it was converted into a Parador, it began a new life where heritage and history are opened to the traveller.
The Golden Room: Suite 314
Among all its rooms, there is one that encapsulates this legacy in a special way: Suite 314, known as the Golden Room, is not just a room, but an experience that connects directly with the building’s past.

This space occupies what was once the ancient Sala Dorada of the fortress, a noble chamber where, according to tradition, Lorenzo Suárez de Figueroa forged ambitions, alliances, and decisions in the mid-15th century. Today, respectfully adapted for guests, it preserves the essence of that era in its coffered ceiling, where heraldic richness and gilded wood are still the main features.

The room combines this historical character with modern comfort. Its spaciousness, the king-size bed, and the carved wood details create a stately atmosphere. However, one of its greatest attractions is discovered by passing through the bathroom… a large private terrace opens to the outside.

From there, the view unfolds over the square and the architectural ensemble of Zafra. The urban skyline, the towers, and the rooftops can be observed at eye level in a panoramic view that invites you to stop time. Furthermore, the terrace preserves original elements such as an imposing hand-forged iron gate, a testament to the skill of craftsmen of the period.
A Stay to experience history first hand
Today, the Parador de Zafra is a destination designed for switching off and immersing oneself in history without sacrificing comfort. Its spaces combine original elements with modern conveniences that make every stay a complete experience.

Walking along its battlements allows you to view the city from a unique perspective. The 15th-century chapel, with its Gothic-Mudejar dome decorated in gold leaf, is one of those jewels that surprises every visitor. The grounds feature gardens, an outdoor pool, and quiet corners where time seems to pass at a different pace.
Staying here is, in a way, becoming part of its history. Sleeping in rooms like Suite 314 allows you to imagine the palatial life of other centuries, but with all the conveniences of the present. Zafra, its surroundings, and this Parador invite you to a getaway where heritage, landscape, and relaxation come together naturally.
