Located in the heart of La Mancha, Almagro is a historical and cultural treasure where time seems to concentrate its Renaissance splendour. Declared an Historical-Artistic Site, it is the perfect destination for a day trip from any corner of Spain.

In the morning: the essence of the best theatre

The day begins in the Plaza Mayor, one of the most unique squares in Spain, with its unmistakable, green-tinted glass galleries. If you have an appetite, the first stop is to taste the traditional Almagro aubergines, a delicacy with Protected Geographical Indication.

A few steps away, the Corral de Comedias: the only theatre from Spain’s Golden Age that has been in operation since the 17th century. A guided tour allows you to discover the secrets of the stage where, centuries ago, Lope de Vega and Tirso de Molina staged their premieres.

The walk continues along the cobbled streets to the Palacio de los Fúcares, an impressive Renaissance building that served as a warehouse for the mercury extracted from Almadén. A unique architectural setting that speaks of the city's past trading importance.

Midday: Manchego feast

The restaurant of the Parador de Almagro is the ideal option for immersing yourself in the authentic gastronomy of La Mancha. Located in a former 17th century convent, the Parador offers an incomparable historical atmosphere and a menu based on high quality local products: pisto manchego with free-range eggs, roast suckling lamb, cod in tiznao or its famous cured Manchego cheese, always paired with wines from the La Mancha Designation of Origin.

Afternoon: heritage and nature

The route continues with a visit to the National Theatre Museum, which houses one of the most complete collections on the history of the performing arts in Spain. Afterwards, a tour of the city's churches and convents reveals gems such as the Church of San Agustín, with its impressive frescoed vault, and the Convent of the Assumption of Calatrava.

And for those who crave a bit of nature, the Tablas de Daimiel National Park awaits just a few kilometres away: a unique wetland in Europe, the last remnant of the ancient fluvial plains that once dominated the plains of La Mancha. It can be explored by bicycle or on foot. Its particular ecosystem, the result of the overflowing of the Guadiana and Gigüela rivers in an area with a gentle slope, has given rise to a unique landscape where aquatic vegetation and fauna coexist in harmony. Its protected status as a National Park guarantees the conservation of this natural space of great ecological value, making it a sanctuary for numerous aquatic birds, which find the perfect refuge for their migration, nesting and wintering cycles.

A day in Almagro is a journey to the Golden Age, where art, history and tradition are combined in an incomparable setting.

Responsible and sustainable tourism

Almagro invites aware tourism, promoting respect for its heritage and support for local businesses. The city is perfect for walking, which reduces its environmental impact, while its commitment to preserving history and theatre make it a top cultural destination.
