Our ongoing crusade against ‘basuraleza’: a commitment that strengthens with every edition
17 de June 2026

The latest edition of the Basuraleza campaign, coordinated by the LIBERA team (comprising SEO/BirdLife and Ecoembes) in early June, has produced figures that speak volumes: 148 tonnes of waste removed from natural areas across Spain, with 36 tonnes scientifically analysed to determine their origin and ecological impact. While the data confirms a worrying trend—revealing that 42% of the waste identified is plastic—it also highlights something equally significant: public engagement is growing, becoming more organised, and proving increasingly proactive.

Within this collective movement, Paradores once again plays a leading role. More than ten of our establishments have mobilised their teams, alongside local schools and community associations, to clear litter from the areas surrounding our historic buildings and protected landscapes. It is not just about cleaning up; it is about stewardship—looking after the land responsibly, understanding that every small action counts, and recognising that raising awareness begins right on the ground.

Our contribution this year went a step further. Thanks to the Basuraleza app, developed by LIBERA in collaboration with Paisaje Limpio and Vertidos Cero, our teams successfully recorded and categorised every piece of waste they found. This work, which often goes unnoticed, is vital: it feeds into a national database that enables evidence-based environmental decisions to be made, advancing the fight against litter through Citizen Science.

For the teams involved, as well as for the many guests who discover the initiative during their stay, these dedicated days have become some of the most highly valued activities of the year. Because protecting nature is not just a statement of intent: it is a way of acting, of getting involved, and of safeguarding the future of the destinations where we operate.

Thanks to our teams and the coordinated efforts of the LIBERA Project, we continue to demonstrate that sustainability is something we build with our own hands.
