Legendary rooms: behind door 219
02 de September 2025

Parador rooms are much more than just places to rest; they are veritable time capsules. Over the years, these historic buildings have hosted important figures such as monarchs, artists and writers, who have left their mark on these unique settings. On this occasion, we invite you to discover one of these stories at the Parador de La Granja, where history, architecture and elegance come together in a space that preserves the essence of times gone by.

Discover the history

Located next to the Royal Palace of La Granja, the Parador de La Granja occupies what was once the Casa de los Infantes, an imposing building dating back to 1770. Built on the orders of Spanish King Charles III, its original function was to house the monarch's sons, Don Gabriel and Don Antonio de Borbón. This building has a rectangular structure and is laid out around three interior courtyards, connected by narrow corridors that give access to the various rooms.

The sobriety of its façades is one of its most striking features, where only the pediments adorning the openings and an entrance door break the simplicity of the design. After being devastated by a fire in 1984, the building was carefully restored and now features classic columns painted in an original shade of green that highlights its elegance.

The Casa de los Infantes was not only a residence but also a military facility, as part of the complex was used to centralise services and troops. Years after its restoration, the building retains its characteristic rear courtyard and towers, which can still be admired today. Its function has changed, but the historical essence of this place lives on in every corner.

The two Bourbon Infantes: two brothers, two destinies

The infantes Don Gabriel and Don Antonio de Borbón, born in Italy while their father was King of Naples, had completely different lives. Don Gabriel, Charles III’s favourite son, was a man of profound erudition and had a taste for the arts. His passion for culture led him to translate into Latin and compose musical pieces, as well as amassing an outstanding art collection. His life was tragically cut short when he died young from smallpox, shortly after losing his wife and son.

Don Antonio, on the other hand, had a much longer life marked by controversy. Known for his affable character, he was noted for his loyalty to Ferdinand VII. During his lifetime, he held several important positions in Spanish politics.

Room 219 – the tribute to Don Gabriel

The most emblematic room at the Parador de La Granja is undoubtedly Room 219, which pays tribute to Don Gabriel de Borbón, the enlightened prince. This room combines modernity and comfort with décor that evokes the Age of Enlightenment, which was so significant for Gabriel. The light tones and elegance of Gustavian colours, such as white and grey, create a serene and refined atmosphere, ideal for those seeking a unique experience.

Infante Gabriel, in addition to being a great patron of the arts, was known for his wisdom and thirst for knowledge. His room is imbued with this atmosphere of erudition, and it is impossible not to feel a connection with the infante who, despite his short life, left a deep mark on Spanish culture.
