It's time to put on your wetsuit and enjoy a surf route through the Cantabrian, Atlantic and Mediterranean waters. Paradores suggests some routes to immerse yourself in idyllic environments full of good atmosphere.

Getting on a board for the first time is a unique experience. The vast geography of the Spanish coast lends itself to the practice of a sport that faces the temperament of the sea, with waves that seduce beginners and challenge the most experienced. In the Basque Country, Mundaka means surfing. At the mouth of the Urdaibai estuary, one of the most desired left waves of the planet is reborn, a real sea ridge that occupies the top 10 in the world. Five meters high and almost five hundred meters long, its size poses a great challenge even for the most experienced surfers.

Without leaving the Basque Country, in Meñakoz, is another temple of surfing, with a shocking wave of almost seven meters that provokes the experienced. Zarautz is for many the capital of surfing in the Basque Country and hosts major international championships. The good atmosphere and the versatility of the waves allows beginners to immerse themselves in the world of surfing and "be in the wave".

In the Cantabrian paradise, Los Locos's beach offers waves all year round. They are clean and energetic wakes that place this sandy area in one of the podiums of honor. In Somo, the possibility of riding the tides extends over more than four kilometers of beach.

The beaches of the Asturian coast are a jewel for surf lovers. In Rodiles, the waves lash the shore with energy, turning this sandy area into an enclave of strong emotions. Tapia de Casariego is the venue of a renowned European championship. This beautiful enclave, although of small proportions, has a blue flag and unbeatable conditions to enjoy this sport. In Salinas Beach, the waves are constant, especially in the winter months, with large peaks, perfect for experienced surfers.

In the ferocity of the north coast, battered by the Atlantic, could not miss the beach of Razo, in Galicia. In the heart of the Costa da Morte, the seafaring atmosphere is impressive, and the rhythm of the tides reverberates in a breathtaking landscape. Pantín beach, between El Ferrol and Cedeira, is a first class surfing cathedral, surrounded by a landscape as beautiful as it is enigmatic. The Pantín Classic, one of the world's classic surfing events, is held on this sandy beach.

Surfing heritage

Tarifa is another important surfing spot in Spain. The wind is guaranteed, although the waves can be a bit of a headache. They are less powerful than in the north, but the extensive beaches of the Andalusian coastline make them reach a very long distance. Tarifa is another vital surfing spot in Spain. The wind is assured, although the waves can give some headaches. They are less powerful than in the north, but the extensive beaches of the Andalusian coastline make them reach a very long distance. On the coast of Cadiz, the beach of El Palmar offers on windy days some adrenaline-filled tubes. The good atmosphere, the pleasant temperatures and the impetuous character of the sea put the finishing touch to this surfing heritage.

Although the Mediterranean is less impulsive than the rest of the sea, the beach of La Mata, in Alicante, is home to one of the treasures of oriental surfing. After a day of surfing, resting your senses on the golden sand will be more than worth the experience. The Canary Islands are full of impressive surfing temples. In Lanzarote, the beach of Famara is whipped by the wind on a sandy volcanic territory. A scenario that is repeated in El Quemao, whose waves are characterized by being very hard, halfway between spiritual and risky. The beaches of Fuerteventura, such as Corralejo, are magnificent to ride between the ridges and enjoy the charm of its natural landscapes.
