The oldest hotel in Spain
Parador de Santiago de Compostela

The Parador de Santiago de Compostela is one of the oldest and most luxurious hotels in Spain. It is in the Plaza del Obradoiro next to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, one of the most visited cathedrals in the world, and has witnessed the passage of pilgrims over the centuries. It began as a Royal Hospital with the Catholic Monarchs to offer them shelter and today it’s known as Hostal dos Reis Católicos. The historic building preserves the Plateresque façade on the outside, four cloisters, elegant corridors and hallways, spectacular rooms, and a museum in its interior.

The Hotel has the largest collection of Madrid School paintings in the Paradors collection. In Santiago de Compostela alone, more than 140 works by artists including Martínez Novillo, Álvaro Delgado and Menchu Gal are on display. What’s more, the Parador has a business centre with large-capacity, spacious rooms for holding corporate and private events and celebrations of all kinds; it is equipped with the best technology and services to guarantee their success.

Beyond the Camino de Santiago, the city offers visitors a multitude of options, such as walking routes to discover the monuments in its streets and squares, walks through its parks and gardens and, if you have time, excursions to explore the Galician estuaries.

What to do in Santiago de Compostela

The city of Santiago de Compostela, declared a World Heritage Site, is inextricably linked to the Camino de Santiago. Its Cathedral is one of the most visited cathedrals in the world, and the Plaza del Obradoiro is a world pilgrimage centre through which thousands of pilgrims pass every year. The Parador de Santiago de Compostela, originally built as a pilgrims’ hospital, has played a major role in the history of this area, which today houses a spectacular museum.

From the Plaza del Obradoiro there are several walking routes through the historic centre, which can take you to other iconic places in the Galician capital, such as the Mercado de Abastos, the Pazo de Fonseca and the Museums of the Pogo Galego and the Pilgrimages.

Its parks and gardens are also good places for a stroll, and they offer the best views of the city.

Of course, we can’t forget its cuisine. In Santiago de Compostela you can sample the delights of Galician cuisine, such as padrón peppers and Tarta de Santiago. There are also five Designations of Origin in Galicia, so don't forget to try them!

If you have time, you should try to see the Galician estuaries: the Rías Baixas from Muros to Vigo and Baiona, with its Illas Atlánticas natural park; the Rías Altas from A Coruña to Barqueiro; A Costa da Morte, from Carnota to Malpica; and the Mariña Lucense.
