From 01/01/2024 until 24/03/2024Only 400 metres away from the historical centre of Santo Domingo de la Calzada, the Parador de Santo Domingo Bernardo de Fresneda stands within the Monastery of San Francisco, a beautiful 16th c. monastery.
The Parador is a building of contrasts, striking a perfect balance between tradition and modernity. Its cosy stone-walled rooms, its union of warm red and blue-grey tones and its art collection of classical and avant garde works, will make your stay an unforgettable one. It also has magnificent salons for your most important events.
The Monastery of San Francisco, commissioned by Fray Bernardo de Fresneda, bishop of Zaragoza, from which the monastery takes its name, consists of three parts: the church, the workshop and dioceian museum and the pilgrims’ hostel, which is now home to the Parador.
Rebuilt by Juan de Herrera in 1595, the building is notable for its sober style and splendid cloister. The impressive restoration work of the novices’ patio will amaze visitors with its wide glass vault, under which exclusive events are held. The Río Cabado salon is the ideal place for the best breakfasts.

Santo Domingo de la Calzada, a city with legendary origins, stands at the foot of the Sierra de la Demanda, on a plain bathed by the waters of the river Oja. A place full of history awaits you there, with streets whose medieval layout will take you back to another age. The best way to discover the city is to explore it on foot, submerging yourself in its beautiful architecture, crowned by the Cathedral, a proto-Gothic construction whose high altarpiece is a jewel of Spanish Renaissance imagery. The beautiful Plaza de España with its medieval walls is also well worth a visit.
Santo Domingo de la Calzada is also surrounded by incredible places, such as the villages of Briones, Cuzcurrita del Río Tirón and San Millán de la Cogolla, birthplace of the Spanish language and home of the Monasteries of Suso and Yuso, declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The city’s location right on the Way of Saint James makes it an ideal starting point for sports such as hiking or golf, while other opportunities include the winter resort of Valdezcaray or the wine route through nearby Haro, which is world famous for its high-quality wines.
Its historic quarter is brimming with treasures in the form of mansions, palaces and churches, such as San Francisco, which is adjacent to the Parador de Santo Domingo Bernardo de Fresneda.
It also preserves the largest walled enclosure in La Rioja, and its Plaza de España and the historic town hall building are remarkable.
Santo Domingo de la Calzada is a good starting point for the Wine Route, in which you can visit the nearby town of Haro and its wineries.
You can also visit nearby villages such as Briones, Cuzcurrita del River Tirón, which has a fabulous heritage, as well as Nájera.
The surrounding towns of San Millán de la Cogolla, the birthplace of the Spanish language, and Ezcaray, a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts because of the Valdezcaray ski resort, are also worth a visit
The Parador Santo Domingo Bernardo de Fresneda is ideal for large events. The impressive remodelling of the Convent of San Francisco has given rise to spaces in such unique settings as a modern hall under a glass vault where banquets and special events can be held.
