The most spectacular is the Caldera de Taburiente Natural Park. It is a cirque with a diameter of more than 8 kilometres in the shape of a caldera, with steep ravines, streams and waterfalls and covered with Canary pine forests. If you’re adventurous, you can try one of its steep trails. Otherwise, you can always look out over the edge of the caldera from the La Cumbrecita viewpoint.
Another of the essential visits on the island is the Roque de los Muchachos viewpoint, which is located at the island’s highest point. It is one of the best places in the world to watch the stars. There you can enjoy a walk along the edge of the Caldera de Taburiente and, if the sky is cloudless, you’ll see the islands of Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro on the horizon.
La Palma offers other special spots such as the Route of the Volcanoes, in the Cumbre Vieja Natural Park; the ravines, such as Fagundo, Los Hombres and La Luz; the Fuencaliente salt flats and the Charco Azul natural pools. If you’re lucky, you can admire the sea of clouds formed by the trade winds hitting the island’s slopes.
The Parador de La Palma is 5 kilometres from the airport and Santa Cruz de la Palma, the capital of the island of La Palma, in the El Zumacal area. It’s a comfortable building in a classic Canary Island architectural style with a large 44,000 m2 garden boasting fruit trees and native plants, which invites you to take a stroll and enjoy the wonderful views of the endless Atlantic Ocean, where you can find peace and discover more of the beauty of this Biosphere Reserve Island.
