History, nature and cuisine by the Cantabrian Sea
Parador de Gijón

A hundred-year-old mill houses the Parador de Gijón in the Isabel La Católica Park, one of the green spaces most popular with the people of Gijón. El Molino Viejo or The Old Mill is a building that has been completely renovated and refurbished to meet the demands of modern guests, while preserving the character of the former buildings. It is surrounded by a magnificent garden of cobbled paths that lead to a pond and a children's play area.

From here you can walk to the beach of San Lorenzo, which joins the city to the Cantabrian Sea, or stroll through the seaside neighbourhood of Cimadevilla and the mount of Santa Catalina, where you can see Chillida's sculpture "In Praise of the Horizon", in addition to a beautiful panoramic view of the Cantabrian coast. You’ll also find the Aquarium and the plant museum of the Botanical Garden near the Parador

Gijón’s old quarter has essential sites such as the Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura, the largest building in Spain, a former university now converted into a cultural space where you can attend exhibitions and head up to the lookout point of La Torre, for impressive views of the entire city. From Gijón you can also visit other seaside towns such as Candás or Luanco; bathe in their beaches and visit the Maritime Museum.

What to do in Parador de Gijón

On the shores of the Cantabrian Sea, Gijón offers an attractive combination of seafaring flavour, architectural heritage and modern urban development next to the beach. Its marina was a finalist in the European Commission's EDEN (European Destinations of Excellence) programme in recognition of its sustainable tourism. Near the marina lies the hill of Santa Catalina, where you can admire Eduardo Chillida's sculpture, "In Praise of the Horizon".

In its city centre, the main points of interest are the Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura, the largest building in Spain, and its Torre del Reloj, a lookout point with spectacular views of Gijón. The Jovellanos House Museum, the Botanical Gardens and the Aquarium are also noteworthy additions to this list. Set aside time to stroll through its neighbourhoods, visit the Cimadevilla peninsula and explore this seaside neighbourhood and Isabel La Católica Park, one of the most-beloved green spaces of the people of Gijón. The Museum of the People of Asturias is nearby, where you can learn a bit more about Gijón.

From Gijón you can arrange a trip to coastal towns with a great seafaring tradition such as Candás and Luanco, or Cudillero and Lastres. And if you drive for just over half an hour, you can reach Oviedo, known for its characteristic medieval quarter that houses the Gothic Cathedral, and the nearby Monte Naranco, two gems of pre-Romanesque architecture.
