Parador de Almagro

Located in a truly exceptional cultural and historical setting, the Parador de Almagro occupies the old Convent of Santa Catalina, which dates back to the 17th century and was the city’s first Franciscan convent.

Visitors can enjoy the unique setting of the 400-year-old monastery, including its beautiful Mudejar tiling. The building itself is full of surprises, such as its 14 interior patios, galleries and passageways with characteristic blue beams, as well as the traditional tilework with geometric decoration.

The Convent of Santa Catalina was built in the 17th c and extensions were added in the following two centuries. The architecture of the building is a combination of Renaissance and Baroque styles, while the original parts of the complex that remain are the refectory and cellar, now surrounded by new patios and spaces built during its conversion into a Parador.

Almagro is closely linked to the Order of Calatrava, one of the most important Spanish religious-military orders. The town was chosen as the headquarters of the order in 1212, and later enjoyed great prestige, augmented by the appointment of Carlos I as Grand Master. It later became the capital city of Spanish theatre in the Siglo de Oro (Spanish Golden Age).

    Explore the surroundings in Almagro

The town of Almagro was declared a Historical-Artistic Site in 1972 for its exceptional beauty and rich heritage. The best way to explore Almagro is to lose yourself in its narrow streets and discover the emblematic 17th c. Corral de Comedias, where plays by Lope de Vega and Tirso de Molina were premiered. A good time to visit it is in July during the International Festival of Classical Theatre, when you can enjoy all its magic. A walk through the streets of Almagro immerses you in history: the Plaza Mayor, with its green glazed balconies and long arcades with stone columns, or buildings such as the church of San Agustín, the Palacio Fúcares and the Convent of La Asunción de Calatrava.

Almagro also means nature. The National Park of Las Tablas de Daimiel is just a few kilometres away: a wetland teeming with life that you can visit by foot or on an electric bike. A little further away is the National Park of Cabañeros, the Nature Park of Lagunas de Ruidera, and the Cerro Gordo volcano. Looking for a different experience? Why not head off to Valdepeñas and discover the wine culture of the region?

Head out a few kilometres from Almagro to enjoy natural spaces such as the Tablas de Daimiel National Park. A wetland full of herons, ducks and even otters, foxes and lizards that you can visit on foot or in off-road vehicles. A little further ahead we come to two other parks: Cabañeros and Las Lagunas de Ruidera.

Other worthwhile excursions include a visit to the Castle of Doña Berenguela in Bolaños de Calatrava, and the Cerro Gordo volcano. Almagro is located in Campo de Calatrava, one of the few volcanic regions in the peninsula. It has some 250 volcanoes and calderas. If you’re a lover of wine, you can stop in Valdepeñas to visit some of its wineries and the Wine Museum.

    Las Tablas de Daimiel

The Tablas de Daimiel are the last example of an ecosystem called fluvial tables, a formation produced by the overflowing of the Guadiana and Gigüela rivers, favoured by the lack of slope in the terrain. The wetland of Las Tablas de Daimiel was declared a National Park in 1973, a biosphere reserve in 1981, and was included in the Ramsar Convention in 1982. Its declaration as a National Park was a crucial step in conserving one of the most valuable ecosystems on our planet, thus ensuring the survival of the birds that use these areas as wintering, nesting and roosting grounds.
