The castle of Henry II of Trastámara
Parador de Ciudad Rodrigo

At the top of a gorge that stands in the plains of the river Águeda, the Parador de Ciudad Rodrigo occupies an emblematic castle rebuilt in 1372 by Henry II of Castile, the first king in the dynasty of Isabel the Catholic.

The Parador offers an ideal location to enjoy the architectural wealth of Ciudad Rodrigo. The recently restored and carefully designed rooms are decorated with modern elements combined with traditional Castilian furniture to capture the medieval spirit of the castle. The Parador also has a park and private play area to make it an ideal place for all the family.

The Parador de Ciudad Rodrigo occupies the city castle, rebuilt by Henry II after he conquered the city from the Portuguese for its strategic value as a watchtower of the Campo Charro and the frontier with Portugal.

The castle, built in the Leonese style, is notable for its large 17 metre wide keep, and for the battlements and machicolations of its impressive walls. The castle’s strategic value meant that it was used up the modern age in conflicts such as the Wars of the Spanish Succession and the Peninsular War.

  • What to do?
Explore the surroundings in Ciudad Rodrigo

The Parador de Ciudad Rodrigo stands on a high point looking over the river, from where visitors can admire the beauty of the buildings in the city. The best way to discover it is to wander through the historical quarter, where you’ll be surrounded by beautiful churches, palaces, aristocratic town houses and the cathedral. Not to be missed. You can also relax and see the sunset from the Parador gardens or participate in one of the astronomical observations organised with the Starlight certification.

The region of Ciudad Rodrigo has things to do and see for everyone. Interested in culture? Salamanca is close to the Parador and well worth a visit, you could take a trip along the Frontier Castles Route, or discover the rock are of the “Siega Verde” Archaeological Zone. If you’re a nature lover, why not explore the unique landscapes in Las Hurdes or the nature parks of Las Batuecas-Sierra de Francia and Arribes del Duero, a Biosphere Reserve since 2015. If you prefer something a little more active, then take the Camino de Hierro, or go canoeing and take advantage of our exclusive discounts for a trip down the river Águeda.

From Ciudad Rodrigo you can head to other towns included in the Network such as Cancelario, Mogarraz, Miranda del Castañar or Ledesma, and La Alberca, in the Sierra de Francia. The Arribes del Duero Nature Park is also close by, with a multitude of sporting and leisure activities.

A little further away is the provincial capital, Salamanca (80 km), a World Heritage City. We recommend a visit to its Plaza Mayor, stopping to look at the façades of the Casa de las Conchas and the University, to find the image of the frog; and climbing the medieval towers of its cathedral for gorgeous views of the city.

The Portuguese border is just 25 kilometres away, a short distance that lets you discover, if you’re up for it, the fortified town of Almeida, where you can walk around most of its walled perimeter.
