Castle and Palace of the Counts of Oropesa
Parador de Oropesa

The spectacular castle of the Álvarez family of Toledo, counts of Oropesa, was converted into a Parador in 1930 and so became the first to be established in a historical building. Built on top of a hill, it has exceptional views of the la Sierra de Gredos.

Here you will travel back in time. When you enter the enormous courtyard and discover its large, airy rooms, the salon with splendid Mudejar coffered ceilings, and the traditional décor, you’ll feel like a medieval noble. And like any aristocrat, you’ll have the opportunity to relax in the terrace and outdoor swimming pool, with a beautiful view of the Campo Arañuelo in the background.

The Parador de Oropesa gets its name from the town’s most important noble, Francisco Álvarez de Toledo y Figueroa, who was appointed as the fifth viceroy of Peru by king Felipe II between 1569 and 1581 and accompanied Carlos I on his campaigns in Africa and Europe.

The building consists of the Castillo Viejo, a Moorish castle of the 12-13th c., and the Castillo Nuevo, built in 1402 as the palace of the Álvarez family of Toledo, counts of Oropesa. El conjunto is notable for its 16th c. stairway and the impressive keep, 25 metres in height and with 5 storeys.

The town’s Medieval past can be seen in the layout of its narrow, cobbled streets.
Activities open to tourists include visits to monuments such as the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, the Convent of La Misericordia and the Church of San Bernardo.
Beyond the immediate area, the Tiétar Valley Route, the Embroidery Route and the Ceramics Route will delight you if you decide to try them.
The area is known for its craft tradition. The fame of the embroidery of Lagartera and the ceramics of Puente del Arzobispo stretch beyond the province. Both towns are close to Oropesa.

Due to its strategic location, Oropesa is also a good starting point for exploring the villages of the County of La Vera, at the foot of the Sierra de Gredos mountains, or you can follow the road into the province of Cáceres and discover other destinations such as Guadalupe, Plasencia and Trujillo.
