History and modernity in the Enchanted City
Parador de Cuenca

The old monastery of San Pablo, built in the beautiful location of La Hoz del Huécar, is home to the Parador de Cuenca, one of the most special place in the city, next to the Bridge of San Pablo and opposite the Casas Colgadas (Hanging Houses).

The interior will surprise you with its decorative fusion of tradition and modernity, and its unique spaces, such as the old glazed cloister, the cafeteria, located in what was the monastery chapel, and the beautiful outdoor swimming pool, with a spectacular view of the city.

The Parador de Cuenca stands in what was the monastery of San Pablo, which was built by the canon Juan del Pozo in 1523 in a Plateresque Late Gothic style and was closely related to the iconic Bridge of San Pablo, which is also named after the canon.

Today, the cloister houses a masterpiece by the artist Julián Casado, entitled “Malevich Series. Variations on the same structure”. The work, made up of 42 canvases painted between 1978 and 1982, is a meditation on the tenets of the Ukrainian artist Kazimir Malevich, the father of constructivism, creating variations of the impact of light on a geometrical body.

    Explore the surroundings in Cuenca

Cuenca, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, is notable for its old quarter. The best way to discover it is to wander around its cobbled streets, losing yourself in the medieval lanes to discover the cathedral, the Plaza Mayor and its monasteries and aristocratic town houses. Or visit the Museum of Abstract Art in the famous Hanging Houses. Here, heritage blends with the spectacular natural landscape of the Hoz del Huécar, which you can also see from the Parador or walk along its banks.

Cuenca is culture and nature. Nearby you can see some of the most important Roman cities of Spain, such as Valeria, Ercávica and Segóbriga, famous for its exceptional theatre. Another local landmark just a short distance away is the Enchanted City, a unique landscape of rock formations that go back 90 million years. A little further away is the Serranía de Cuenca, which offers beautiful landscapes, such as the source of the river Cuervo and the el Ventano del Diablo. And if you’re looking for something more active, then join us for a trip in a hot air balloon, or take the new Las Hoces zipline, the longest dual urban zipline in Europe.

The Old Town has much more to offer. The Plaza Mayor and its cathedral, the ruins of the castle, the Town Hall and the street of Alfonso VIII with its colourful houses are essential visits. If you’re an art lover, be sure to visit the Museum of Abstract Art.

About 25 kilometres away is the Enchanted City: a natural landscape of rock formations dating back 90 million years where we can recognise the shapes of dog, a tortoise or the face of a man. The Enchanted City is in the heart of the Serranía de Cuenca, which also offers special spots such as the source of the river Cuervo or the so-called Ventana del Diablo or Devil's Window.
