From 01/01/2025 until 28/02/2025The Parador de Corias can be found in the monastery of San Juan Bautista, also known as the “The Escorial de Asturias” because of its impressive architecture. Situated in a privileged natural setting, its spectacular views of the river Narcea will amaze you.
Decorated in a style that combines tradition and modernity, the Parador offers unique salons equipped for any kind of event. It is also the only Parador in the network where guests share space with the previous tenants, a community of Dominican monks who manage the adjoining church.
Built between 1022 and 1044, the Romanesque monastery of San Juan Bautista was refurbished and enlarged in 1744 by Ventura Rodríguez, one of the most important Spanish Neo-Classical architects of the 18th c.
The Parador de Corias hides two treasures in the basement, a museum with the remains of the original 11th century church. The other is a unique work of art in the Paradores collection, an impressive piece by the Portuguese artist Rui Macedo called Cabinet de Curiosites (Cabinet of Curiosities).

A local song starts with the words “at the feet of one hundred mountains that rise all around”, and this is the case with the town of Cangas de Narcea, just two kilometres away from the Parador. The best way to discover it is to wander through its stone paved streets, full of mansion houses, palaces and churches, a reflection of the lineage of the first Asturian kings. The traditional beauty of the region combines beautiful typical buildings such as the Molino de Villajur and monuments such as the Sanctuary of the Virgen del Acebo, one of the Marian churches of Asturias.
More than anything, Cangas de Narcea is a natural paradise. The old stables of the Monastery of Corias are home to the Centre of the Natural Park of Fuentes del Narcea, Degaña e Ibias, where you’ll find a starting point for all kinds of hiking and adventure activities in the magical place. You shouldn’t miss the Natural Reserve of the Forest of Muniellos, the largest oak forest in Spain, where brown bears and grouse – emblems of the regional fauna – can be found. Cangas del Narcea is also the home of D.O. Cangas wine, with a wine museum, cellars and vineyards open to visitors.
The monastery where the current Parador de Corias is located is also a Historical-Artistic Monument. The former stables house the visitor's centre Casa del Parque de Fuentes Narcea, Degaña e Ibias, perfect for lovers of hiking, hunting, fishing, cycling and adventure. A visit to the Bosque de Muniellos nature reserve, the largest oak forest in Spain inhabited by brown bear and capercaillie, is a must. The whole region offers a network of Short and Long Distance trails with more than 300 km. There are accessible routes for beginners as well as for skilled mountain enthusiasts.
Cangas de Narcea is also an important wine-producing region, where you’ll find the Wine Museum and visit some of the region's wineries. There are other towns and villages of great tradition and beauty nearby, such as Ḷḷamas del Mouro, known for its black pottery, or Bisuyu, which retains the purity of Asturian constructions. The Sanctuary of the Virgen del Acebo, one of the Marian sanctuaries of Asturias, lies 12 kilometres away from the Parador.
