Parador de Guadalupe

The Parador de Guadalupe is next to the Royal Monastery of Guadalupe and Plaza de Santa María. A building dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, it’s notable for its arches, the magnificent cloister with its latticework-covered, Moorish-inspired arches and a beautiful garden at the back complete with water features and a small vegetable garden. From the swimming pool you can enjoy views of the Royal Monastery, which is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

The Parador de Guadalupe was formed by two buildings being joined together: the Hospital de San Juan Bautista or Hospital de Hombres and the Colegio de Infantes or Grammar School.

They were both run by the monastery and symbolise the two pillars of medieval knowledge: humanism and science.

Guadalupe is a town in Estremadura in the heart of the Unesco-declared Viluercas-Ibores-Jara Geopark, where you can lose yourself in its cobbled streets and discover the traditional houses.

This small town is home to a highly valuable 14th and 16th century historic-artistic site.

You can’t miss Plaza de Santa María and the old Jewish Quarter. Don’t miss the Plaza de Santa María and the old Jewish Quarter. And, if you have time, the surrounding mountain villages such as Cañamero, Logrosán and Berzocana are well worth a visit.

This architectural beauty has Mudejar, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements, and has witnessed great historical events such as Christopher Columbus’s audience with the Catholic Monarchs, in which they offered him the caravels for his voyage to the Americas.

Inside are the Church of Our Lady, the Camarín de la Virgen, the Mudejar Cloister, the Chapter House, the Sacristy and the Chapel of San Jerónimo with paintings by Zurbarán.

You can also visit its museums, where ’you'll find works by Goya, El Greco, Pedro de Mena and Juan de Flandes.

Near the Royal Monastery is the Plaza de Santa María de Guadalupe, in the town centre; leading off it are the cobbled streets of its historic quarter, which you should walk around until you find the most interesting places: the Old Jewish Quarter, the complex of hospitals, such as the Hospital de San Juan Bautista, which today forms part of the Parador complex, and its five Medieval arches.

In the surrounding valleys we invite you to visit the Granja de Mirabel Palace, the Arca del Agua, the Granja de Valdefuentes Farm and the Ermita del Humilladero Hermitage.

If you are a nature lover, you will love visiting the Villluercas-Íbores-Jara Geopark.

Don’t miss the Plaza de Santa María and the old Jewish Quarter. And, if you have time, the surrounding mountain villages such as Cañamero, Logrosán and Berzocana are well worth a visit.
