The Parador de Cardona is located in one of the most impressive medieval complexes in Catalonia. It is an extraordinary fortification and icon of Catalan military defence that is said to never have been conquered in its eleven centuries of history. The original 9th-century complex occupies an exclusive position on the top of a hill, keeping watch on both the Pyrenees and the countryside of inland Catalonia. Today, you can see the charming medieval town of Cardona.
The Parador retains the Torre Minyona of the original enclosure, a ten-metre high tower with a cylindrical base. Legend has it that this was where the Lord and Lady of Cardona locked up their daughter who was in love with a young Muslim warlord, to prevent the lovers from meeting. The Collegiate Church of San Vicenç, an architectural gem of Catalan Lombard Romanesque architecture, is also well preserved.
The Parador rooms are located in the residential palace of the Cardona family, where the decor has been carefully designed to maintain the charm and unique nature of the accommodation. Its restaurant is one of the most impressive in the Parador network. Its pointed arches hold up the roof of an extensive space that connected the former palatial quarters and the refectory of the clerics of San Vicenç. The plasterboards between the beams depict the coat of arms decorated with the Cardona thistles.

The historical centre of Cardona has been designated a Cultural Site of National Interest, in the category of historical complexes. The best way to familiarise yourself with this area is to explore its streets and squares and discover the history it holds. The town and its castle were a strategic enclave on the border with Al Andalus, and for centuries, it dominated the salt trade. Carmona is home to the Montaña de Sal, a singular natural phenomenon that is open to visitors today. Once the site of the Cardona potassium salt mine, it is today the Montaña de Sal Cultural Park, and conducts guided tours of this salt massif.
Two great attractions of the region are its nature and its villages. From the Parador you have your choice of hiking or bicycle trails, such as the Molinos de la Sal (Salt Mills) route, which runs along the sites of the stones from three old mills along the banks of the Cardener river. Other natural itineraries to enjoy are the Via Salaria, the Monks' Route, and the Border Route which takes you on the paths that surrounded the territories of the old Andalusian border.
The area around Carmona is home to Romanesque monuments, museums and monasteries such as the Cardener Fountain or Montserrat (45 km.) with the Monastery and the Museum. And Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia and the cradle of its culture, is just an hour and a half away by car. It’s famous for its Gothic Quarter and the Eixample neighbourhood, the site of some of Barcelona's most distinctive Catalan modernist buildings. These are home to world-famous works by the architect Antonio Gaudí, which include but are in no way limited to, the Casa Milà, the Casa Batlló and the Sagrada Familia, among others.
The Parador de Cardona is extremely well-connected at just an hour and a half away from Barcelona, and combined with its unique composition, this medieval castle is an extraordinary venue for all kinds of events. The well-conceived combination of medieval structures and modern-day comfort will confer a distinctive character to your meetings. The spectacular architecture of the restaurant, located in the old refectory of the medieval complex, will make your celebrations unforgettable.
