From 14/02/2024 until 11/03/2024On the heights of the valley of the river Támega, dominating the frontier between Spain and Portugal, stands the Parador Castillo de Monterrei, and impressive castle regarded by many historians as the largest acropolis in Galicia.
After careful rehabilitation completed prior to the opening of the Parador in 2015, the Parador now offers visitors an intriguing blend of modernism and history, where the elegance and dignity of the building’s historical architecture combines with modern designer spaces where you can enjoy the very best in local cuisine in comfort.
The Castle of Monterrei is the result of a series of military and residential constructions, made up of three walled enclosures that include the Palacio de los Condes, built in the Renaissance style, and the spectacular towers of the Keep and Las Damas.
The strategic importance of this magnificent building led to it being used for many purposes, from a medieval castle to a manor house, barracks and even a pilgrims’ hospital. It was also the birthplace of printing in Galicia: the Misal Auriense, the oldest printed book in Galicia, was printed there in 1494.

Take advantage of the Paradores offers
The Castle of Monterrei occupies a privileged position, dominating the valley of the river Támega and the frontier between Spain and Portugal. The best way to discover the surroundings is to join one of the guided tours that take you through the castle complex, or head off to the nearby town of Verín, whose old quarter is full of surprises such as the Casa del Escudo and the Chapel of San Lázaro. Another surprise just 3 kilometres away from the Parador is the Church of Santa María de Mixós, which dates back to the 10rh century. And if you pay us a visit in February, you shouldn’t miss the Entroido, one of the oldest and most iconic fiestas in Galicia.
Monterrei also offers unique experiences for all tastes. If you’re a culture lover, you’ll find historical routes such as the Way of St James and the Vía de la Plata, or the largest number of hórreos (traditional grain stores) in Galicia at the village of A Merca. If you want to visit Portugal, one option is the Thermal Water Route, which passes through the beautiful villages of Chaves and Vidago. And if you love nature, the O Invernadeiro Nature Park, one of the hidden jewels of Galicia, is less than an hour away.
Monterrei Castle is situated near Verín, a beautiful town in the southeast of the province of Ourense. Here we can explore the traditional neighbourhood of San Lázaro, the Casa do Asistente, with its unique coat of arms, and walk through the old quarter discovering other corners such as the Plaza de la Merced, the Cabreiroá spring, the chapel of San Lázaro, the Plaza Viriato, the Plaza del Rey or the Plaza Mayor, and enjoy a leisurely stroll along the river Támega.
Here you can also visit the mineral-rich medicinal springs of Verín, go on routes exploring the Monterrei D.O. wineries, and visit the Parque Natural del Invernadero. Additionally, its proximity to the Portuguese border means you can visit the town of Chaves.
If you’re a lover of nature sports, Verín has the perfect environment for mountain biking and hiking routes. At the Parador we’ll answer all your questions and offer you seasonal activities such as horse riding, golf and swimming. The Castelo de Monterrei is also an ideal place to follow the St. James’ Way and the Silver Route, both of which pass through the area, and the Thermal Water Route between the Galician town of Verín and the Portuguese towns of Chaves and Vidago.
Monterrei Tourist Train
Galicia also offers tourist train tours, one of which is the Monterrei Tourist Train. Entroido
A Festival of National Tourist Interest, it is one of the most popular Carnivals in the region. It begins on a Sunday, the so-called "Domingo de Corredoiro", with the sound of fireworks, brass bands and the gathering of the "cigarrones" (masked men who run around encouraging people to participate) in the morning. That same day, in the afternoon and evening, the first masked ball is held in the main square, although the Carnival begins on Thursday, the "Jueves de Comadres", when the women leave the men at home and go out to dinner in disguise. The most exciting day is Sunday, with the great parade of floats and cigarrones.
The Parador de Monterrei is ready to host all sorts of events. Its unique halls are the perfect setting for any meeting, banquet or celebration. Each of these three halls is fully equipped with all the necessary equipment: overhead projector, video, flip chart, microphones, screens, etc.
