Trip to the Canary Islands: route to the Pico Viejo from the Parador de Cañadas
03 de May 2016

At the heart of the Teide National Park, perfectly integrated in the landscape and with views of the volcano, this charming hotel is an authentic mountain shelter. The Parador de las Cañadas del Teide is the hotel you need to book to enjoy a full experience discovering this protected area, which is a World Heritage Site since 2007.

Do you know why it is called the Cañadas del Teide?

There are seven cañadas (glens) in this Martian-looking site, surrounded by peaks and little volcanoes which emerged in the shadows of the 3718 metres of altitude of the Teide (or Father Teide, as it is called in the island, keep it in mind). The glens form an enormous caldera of about 17 kilometres in diameter inside the National Park, with an extension of 190 square kilometres. There are perfect hiking routes through the glens to admire this astonishing landscape, unique all over the world. Here is a tip: the Islands' humidity is really low so make sure to always carry some water with you when hiking. You can start trekking routes from the Parador through the glens. If you have any doubt, our team will advise you on the route that best suits your stay.

Walking around the Parador at sunset is a must. And if you are lucky, you will see what it is like to walk over the clouds.

Taking the cable car

If you are not an expert in long walks to reach the highest peaks, we recommend taking the cable car from the 2,356 metre zone up to the 3,555 metres in a ride that only takes 8 minutes. Leave the Parador early in the morning to be among the first to climb to the Estación Superior (the one at 3,555 metres above sea level) and avoid long queues.

At this point, please take your time and enjoy the spectacular views of the Cañadas del Teide. Then, gather strength and start walking through one of the three routes that starts at this point. One of the most impressive routes is the Pico Viejo (as you leave the cable car, go left), which is a signposted path bordered with stones. Follow this way and do not venture to climb on your own. At some point, you will notice a sulphur smell. It comes from the volcano that is above you! Pure experience.

This route can be completed in a couple of hours (return), and just to admire the astonishing landscape it is already worth the trip.
