The name of the lake is related to the legend that says that it is a bottomless lake. The Spanish writer Antonio Machado wrote a literary piece telling the story of Alvargómez, a local that inherited such a good heritage when his parents died. He found love and married a woman with whom had three children. Everything seemed to be perfect and Alvargómez was so happy with his life and family.

After some time, his children got married and those wives were kind of obsessed with the richness of Alvargómez. One day, he went on a walk around the lake and he fell asleep next to it. He started dreaming of his sons killing him and, all of a sudden, it came true and he was thrown away into the lake with stones tied on his feet. The lake became his eternal tomb, the body was never found and no-one ever suspected of his sons.

Another legend says that the Laguna Negra is connected to the sea by subterranean streams and caves.

Reality is far from all that. The lake maximum depth is around the 12 metres! In fact, it is not dangerous at all. The 1st of August there a tradition in which people cross the lake on what it is called the Travesía a Nado.
